There is growing evidence that some US-based troll operators are increasingly leveraging VPN services to disguise their locations and pose as foreign influences, just as foreign trolls have historically mimicked American personas.
X has responded by working to develop a VPN detection mechanism, which flags accounts where a VPN is in use and warns viewers that the displayed country or region “may not be accurate”.
This is an attempt to counteract both foreign and domestic trolls from manipulating perceived account origin. However, as long as VPN use persists, it remains a challenge to reliably distinguish a genuine foreign interest operation from a domestic one posing as such.
