The Valid Questions
Is this a retroactive Billionaires tax? Will states with large school/infrastructure deficits neatly sue for the exact amount (with cushion) against social media companies? And will that amount be enough to fill budget shortfalls? Does their state and school district function off of social media? Better yet, do they have a Facebook page for marketing towards students and parents? Should all of their socials be pulled if they claim it’s so harmful?
And if social media affects childhood mental health, should abusive teachers be clocked? Should Carrie sue the school for pigs blood dumped on her head? Is this a freedom of speech or freedom of access complaint that the Supreme Court has to review?
What does this mean for platforms if customers or states can still use your products after they sue when they failed to manage their budgets?
It seems strange to not shake down other stuff but this is the straw for some reason. Is this a dangerous territory for the new Luddite Movement to attack apps and other forms of technology not to the liking of a public that pocket watches?
Personal regulation be damned, at what point do adults start suing when they’re fail to follow through suggested methods of use? Can parents sue rap labels? Can Black women sue weave shops and perm companies? Does Jack Daniels catch a stray for a drunk driver?
