The formally trained dancer and iconic co-host became a regal fixture for Apollo Theater (1987 – 2002). Kiki Shepard became a walking relic of Black femininity, presented at a time in America’s history in the 1980s, when Black women were presented as uneducated welfare queens.
She’d later be allowed to enter stronger acting roles with A Different World, Baywatch, Everybody Hates Chris, Blackjack Christmas, Mind Your Business, Grey’s Anatomy, and Highly Favored.
Her KIS Foundation, Inc., focuses on awareness and support for people living with sickle cell disease.
