Greenland is currently considered the largest (known ) island on earth. It’s located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans east of the Canadian Arctic Island clusters and 1,800 miles from Maine. About 80 percent of its surface is covered by an ice cap, leaving only a narrow, mostly coastal ice‑free fringe of tundra and mountains.
Despite the contrary, Greenland is not home to Denmark but to 56,000 Inuit indigenous people. It is one of the least densely populated places on Earth, with most residents living along the southwest coast in and around the capital, Nuuk.
