META, owned by Mark Zuckerberg had to pay out over $16 billion to US states for a series of perported accusations:
States alleged Meta deliberately used addictive design features on young users.
META misled families and the public about harms
Improperly collected personal data from children under 13.
These civil allegations were not technically criminal charges, and with the settlement it didn’t expand to a criminal conviction.
Schools Require Social Media For Civic Engagement & Scholarships
If you apply for a scholarship in the United States, for some reason you need to submit your social media account for video submissions. The school wants to market your image and your story for recruitment and evaluation.
To engage in education nowadays you have to become a bit of a social media influencer. The pathway to education requires multiple humiliation rituals and the need for your life to be a sad sackery to be wounded enough to receive funding and academic validation You don’t have a story that can be exploited your essentially ignored. For some students that experience bias without social media, the need to have public display of life leaves them open for bully offline, now with gang stalking and harassment but, the schools are the ones that make that a requirement to turn in homework, attend events, and even learn of school alerts.
Businesses Ignore Privacy Too
If you have a business, your social media following is required to receive funding for many corporate collaborations and investor backing. Despite no proof that a customer sales translate to real life, many businesses are still cramming their following metrics as a need to back business models that only stay afloat by advertising dollars, not actual sales.
In other cases some businesses rely on social media for customer service so, if you have a problem with your cell service, every damn body now knows your cell number and your price disclosure.
Social Media Billionaires Owe Their Customers
If the public quantifies the click to dollars, at what point does the customer get some kind of compensation? If the content is customer driven, this is the one example of socialism actually making sense. And because Capitalism only exist in a socialist system, Zuckerberg would be the fat cat capitalist getting rich, off of public culture discourse.
side note: If you don’t know the parts of America that functions beyond the parameters of socialism you might not understand how money can be made without capitalism but, that’s another conversation.
Without memes, TV show hastags, and Asian and Black culture, would social media even be a thing? Here we are 20+ years later, and older people still don’t get technology to the point boycotting social media isn’t a thing. Boycotting data center that house their social media campaigns against data centers and the principal delivery method to protest Target. We wouldn’t even have seen MAGA or Hood dudes trying to pose as intellectuals, 15 years after social media craze if it wasn’t for the people who first made it a platform THE place for undiscovered and blackballed talent.
Social Media, Made Society Alert
For good, exposing bad behavior created a self correcting method where we saw racist medical encounters, Karen’s, dozens of talent that bypassed professional gatekeeping and cultural shifts like the Backrooms film. A new generation of entertainers and multi million dollar campaigns, costing nearly nothing. Social media allowed Millennials to join the elusive workforce, flipping skills deemed “invalid” into thousand’naire and millionaire skills.
Ill never negatively speak on social media because it was a part of my childhood and coming if age but, I knew it wasn’t going to be my “thing” when many of my friends (and myself) became victims of perpetual idea theft. If I looked back most of our contributions, became the backbone for most the celebrities that won’t shut the hell up. They’re out here are selling other people’s lives and putting themselves in Jason Arday (RIP) situations, where major companies are collapsing because of these false personas are hinged on this lifestyle being valid enough to inspire new customers.
The biggest issues is when celebrities use social media or public figures to conveniently counter scandalra, or use social media for person/professional manipulation but, joining in on the public shaming of Social media, specially META.
Even this new Social Media sequel that came out seems a bit bias, especially if newspapers played a role for decades, manipulating public opinion. Why would a newspaper that posted the Central Park 5, have so much heat for META, making all of this seem more like bitter pills than a genuine need to “fix” the public’s already toxic manifestation.
The Responsibility
Many times I could post things that raise public awareness but, much of the incidents these days don’t provide enough details to make solid considerations. When it comes to war, international trade and things that can be altered, I try my best to wait because, it’s easy to join in and pile on, then see the policy changes the next day. Then you see people make very permanent decisions based on fear or speculation.
That part of the film trailer does highlight the addiction of fear but that chaos mania didn’t start with social media. And I don’t think the Millerites had Facebook.
A social media career was never going to be my thing because simply I don’t care enough to follow things that are constantly changing. It’s exhausting. So, when things are posted it’s my way of saying “hey look at this and see if you see it too. Or am I crazy.”
IRL
I have a real life offline so, it hasn’t been life or death to post because it’s more important for life or death in real life. I knew early on, not living on social media and being more present was more my speed. It’s a requirement to touch grass and that self preservation would spare me for the long journey and not drain me. I applaud those who choose that path but I knew it wouldn’t be something I could do religiously.
We all have our own limitations and understanding of our personal weaknesses. For me, not always posting the first thing I hear without ready doing a forensic audit is really how I keep the information from becoming my identity.
